Using a feather to paint lines
finger tips to paint dots…
I have just ordered an ochre pack from you. I was wondering what you normally use for a binder? Could you let me know?
Thanks for buying the ochre. In the oldays we used
wattle sap, fig sap, blooood…..but…
For binder nowadays I have to use pva glue (ordinary wood glue, it’s white and dries clear.)
Aquadhere…Bondcrete? …Hardware store…Mix it about 5 to one with water…to the consistency of milk… in a small bottle.
It works really well and is the standard for ochre if you want it to stick permanently
Add it to the ochre and stir til the ochre is like paint. Let it sit for a few minutes to soak in. Stir it occasionally
Top up with binder from time to time as it dries out…and if it gets a bit gluggy add some fresh water.
Try to mix only what you will need to start,
A LITTLE BIT OF OCHRE GOES A LONG WAY
It is easy to use too much….Too thick a mixture, it gives great texture and depth
but really for the colour you only need a paint mix, not a concrete mix.
For any loose rough surface give it a coat of the PVA and water mix as a primer.
Keep ochre and pva paint sealed when not in use or it will set as hard as a rock…
and you’ll need to soak it in water for days to soften the glue and hopefully use it again.
Any help you need just email
Or you can use the ochre straight up mixed with water to the consistency of paint,
let it dry and spray it with the above binder using a hand spray bottle….gently, a couple of light coats,
let them dry… couple more…(and don’t get it mixed up with the black spray paint 😉
Or use hair spray, or a clear spray on sealer from the hardware.
Try it first because sometimes with a thin white ochre layer, the sprays tend to make the white go clear….!!
If you want it to stick… I use bondcrete (PVA GLUE) and water mixed to the consistency of milk , about 5 to 1. Add to the ochre.
If not wanting it to stick permanently just use water
…though the Red stains clothes forever… so…
Hi Rick, what background or primer do you use?
A background of fine charcoal mixed with the pva and water is pretty cool…
otherwise paint the background black and the ochres Red,Yellow & White will show up beautifully even just as splashes
Hope this helps,
…O..and never forget to…..
